 Pergolas traditionally evolved from the grand masonry pergolas of the Italian Renaissance gardens in Italy. Pergolas can also be traced back to ancient Egypt where they were used primarily as a foundation for climbing plants and to provide shade. Pergolas were typically constructed of two rows of columns or posts roofed with an open framework of beams or cross rafters over which plants could be trained.
